Description Black metal PROTECTOGRAPH CHECK WRITER. Red velvet? lining on the rollers inside. Original yellow label with manufacturer's information. Inner cavity displays original operation instructions. A long narrow cast iron machine 42 x 12 x 11 cm high with a nickel plated table platform to one side measuring 10 x 11 cm. Along the top is the scale for the dollars and cents. Number scales also appear on the platform and on the side of the main part of the machine. The platform is attached to two (26 cm long) bars which in turn is attached by screw nails to the main part of the machine. A crank handle for writing the cheques is at one end of the machine and just below is a small spring lever. Directly below the lever on the lower part of the machine is a nameplate on which the following is recorded:

Todd Protectograph Co.
Patent notice 647078 Rochester
on bottom N.Y., U.S.A."

The Patent information printed on the bottom of the machine is as follows:
"United States patents ran from Dec. 31, 1901 to Aug. 3, 1915
Canadian Patents from Apr. 11, 1905 to Sept. 9, 1913
and Great Britain from 1905 to 1914
plus foreign patents and other patents pending"
Makers mark Directly below the lever on the lower part or the machine is a nameplate on which the following is recorded:

on bottom N.Y., U.S.A."
Provenance This check writing device was manufactured at Rochester, New York, by the Todd Protectograph Co. (established in 1899). Circa 1916?
