About this object
Mechanical pin wheel compact desk top calculator. Numbers were entered by inserting a wooden stylus into the depression of each of the wheels. The stylus is attached to the right hand side of the calculator held by a metal clamp. This calculator performs addition by turning the wheels one way or subtraction by turning the wheels in the opposite direction. Used at the Telegraph Point Post Office by Postmaster Jack (John William) Mooney [1911-1981].
The Telegraph Point Post Office was established on 1 January 1872 by Jack Mooney's Great Grandmother Mrs Ann Churchill. Jack's Grandmother Sarah Rowsell (nee Churchill) was Postmistress from 1883 to 1900 and his mother Evelyn Mooney (nee Rowsell) was Postmistress from 1900 to 1946. Jack Mooney become Postmaster on his mother's retirement in 1946.
